Last season was probably our best ever from the perspective of player conduct. There was only one red card, minimal yellow cards and no epic emails sent to me complaining about conduct, attitude etc.; a marked difference from some previous years. Let’s keep it up.

So, just as a reminder:

This is a social league where we all remember it is really just a game and winning does not really matter. I sincerely believe that we are all far more likely to reflect on the friends we made rather than the games we won, goals we scored or saves we made (although I confess I do still relive some of my better moments as I rest my weary head upon my pillow each night).

It is also a game where there might be the occasional bruise. Twenty-two people in funny shorts chasing after one ball in a confined space for 90 minutes will lead to the inevitable collision. Don’t take it personally.

If there is ever a time when you feel aggrieved by the actions of an opponent, take a deep breath, count to ten and sub out until you have your composure back.

In this league there is:

  • absolutely no reason to get publicly mad at the referees
  • absolutely no reason to play aggressively
  • absolutely no reason for malice aforethought
  • absolutely no reason to direct foul and abusive language at others
  • absolutely no reason to act in an unsporting manner
  • absolutely every reason to shake everyone’s hand after the final whistle
  • absolutely every reason to share a post game beverage with teammates and opponents

This list could go on, but you get the idea…
