Keeping Hope Alive

After reaching the dizzy heights of the league table, both the Wright Stuff and Red Hot Tamales felt the heat both figuratively and literally last Thursday. With the whistle beckoning, both teams certainly expected a stroll in the park against the struggling AARP and Pink Panthers. Both became shock victims of that old adage, you know the one, “on any given day……” Yes, the stuffing was knocked (W)right out of the Tamales as both suffered defeats that propelled the elated Chuters back into the hunt after they eclipsed the waning Mooners. Meanwhile, the take no prisoners attitude of the Lift ‘n Pints saw them actually take prisoners as they rounded up and shackled the recently rejuvenated Chaingang to consolidate fourth place. With these results all bets are off with the play offs looming on the Sierra horizon. You know that famous adage – “on any given day, with any given vacation schedule or any given work schedule anyone can beat anyone in the cliché ridden RSCSL.”

One issue is bobbing up and down over the Sierra ridge just like an anxious Robert Green facing a Clint Dempsey free kick. The global goal keeper shortage has gone local, 50% of starting keepers are MIA this week and 100% of “back up” goalies are AWOL or denying they even mentioned playing between the sticks on the registration form. So the league is appealing to all those budding Brad Freidels, courageous Casey Kellers or tempestuous Tim Howards out there to grab their gloves, listen to lunacy and abandon common sense by joining the most elite of all soccer clans – the GK. Heed the call, your soccer league needs you.

So this week is the last of the regular season. There is a break next week (August 5th)  and then play offs begin on August 12th. All teams continue playing through until the last game of the season on August 26th. Due to field conflicts one game each week of the play offs will be scheduled at nearby Galena High School .

“Oh no, soccer is over soon” I hear you whimper. Hang to your horses, all is not lost. Be aware of these sweat inducing opportunities coming your way in the near future:

Indoor women’s league just starting at Home Field Athletics on Monday nights.

Over 33 men’s  indoor will begin soon at Home Field Athletics (Monday evenings)

Over 45 men’s indoor continuing at Home Field Athletics (Tuesday evenings)

Masters Coed Indoor beginning September at Home Field Athletics

Contact me for more information on any of these opportunities, either to enter a team or to find a team.

Game Postponement Policy

Although I am now optimistic that the questionable weather is behind us it is advised that you check your email at 3pm on a game day just in case a postponement has to be announced.

By the way good weather is now defined as anything above 32 degrees Fahrenheit, wind speeds below 50 mph with precipitation of any kind and intensity acceptable.
