Game On
Hard to believe we are almost tohe play-offs. Hard to believe that the red hot favorites the Blue Mooners have now been reeled in by the foaming Pints. A vacation here and an injury there has tightened everything up and set the stage for a finale befitting the US Women’s National team. With the Chuters exacting sweet revenge on the Mooners (despite the heroics of Mr. Grimm between the sticks) they have now served notice that it ain’t over until it is over and if the Panthers (sometimes known as the Panters) can rekindle mid-season form it will be a four horse race. Down under in the silver division the Chili Peppers are showing signs that they can play, their defence once known as the Red Sea is now a little more water tight and up top the Gamble-Wilson combo is finally producing dividends. On their day the Chaingang can certainly break out of gaol (that is proper English for jail) and the Wright Stuff is a match for anyone when they show up and, I daresay, the AARP can blend youth wisdom to good effect when they feel like it.

How are the playoffs going to work?
Assuming we do not lose any weeks to weather postponements or upcoming Raptures it is going to go like this after the 14 game regular season:

The top four teams will split into the Gold Division to play for the Dunning Cup
The bottom four teams will split into the Silver Division to play for a yet to be named                                           trophy
                *              Within each division the teams will play each other once, adopting the same points                                             system used in the regular season. The top team will be declared winners with Gold                                    winners the overall champions.

Now I can already hear the grumbling of those who want sudden death and everyone in the same, yet seeded, pot. Then are those that just want pot. My reasoning is as follows. Every post season game is a “meaningful” one. No one game eliminates a team or advances a team. The absence of a key player for one game or addition of a key player for one game does not mean curtains. All post season games have the potential to influence the final outcome and hopefully this will maintain interest up to the bitter-bittersweet end. In the past some teams have fizzled once eliminated with those “consolation” games being duds.

Disagree? – comments and well-reasoned arguments are welcomed, but changes will not go into effect this season unless forced upon us by postponements.

Tiebreakers:

1.                    Head-to-head
2.                    Goal difference
3.                    Goals scored
4.                    Birant of the Blue Mooners is working on the calculus for such an event.
