The Mother of All Coed Soccer Newsletters

The Weekly Diary of the COED Soccer Dream

Reno Coed Soccer’s Action Packed Weekly

Another week and another Blue Mooners’ win. Who will stop this behemoth? Well, Lift ‘n Pints got back in the groove and the Pink Panthers continue to impress; once again it will all hinge on how the stagger unwinds as vacation and injury season fast approaches. The Wright Stuff continue to compete in every game but cannot buy a break, surrendering a 3-0 goal advantage as the AARP’s ravenous Roberti retired the Wright Stuff with a revelatory revival with a hatrick that turned the game on its head. The Chaingang continue to be shackled by misfortune while Mt. Rose feel the pain of absent soles or is that souls? Meanwhile the Chili Peppers marinate in a parade of woulda, coulda, shoulda introspection as they fail to put any pepper on any shots they take. So it goes.

Comparative Stat of the Week

Romanians make up 2.3% of registered players but responsible for 20.2% of goals scored in our league? Which begs the question why can’t the Romanians convert Truckee Meadows Coed dominance into international performance? Answers on a postcard please.

Questions I am beginning to be asked other than “how do you stay so trim?”

When do we move to South Valleys ?

The definite date is June 23rd, but there is an outside chance it will be June 16th – stay tuned. Migrating south will also coincide with moving to Lamppost Pizza for post game refreshments.

How are the playoffs going to work?

Assuming we do not lose any weeks to weather postponements or upcoming Raptures it is going to go like this after the 14 game regular season:

* The top four teams will split into the Gold Division to play for the Dunning Cup

* The bottom four teams will split into the Silver Division to play for a yet to be named trophy

* Within each division the teams will play each other once, adopting the same points system used in the regular season. The top team will be declared winners with Gold winners the overall champions.

Now I can already hear the grumbling of those who want sudden death and everyone in the same, yet seeded, pot. Then are those that just want pot. My reasoning is as follows. Every post season game is a “meaningful” one. No one game eliminates a team or advances a team. The absence of a key player for one game or addition of a key player for one game does not mean curtains. All post season games have the potential to influence the final outcome and hopefully this will maintain interest up to the bitter-bittersweet end. In the past some teams have fizzled once eliminated with those “consolation” games being duds.

Disagree? – comments and well-reasoned arguments are welcomed, but changes will not go into effect this season unless forced upon us by postponements.

Tiebreakers:

1. Head-to-head

2. Goal difference

3. Goals scored

4. Birant of the Blue Mooners is working on the calculus for such an event.

New Game in Town

A new soccer store – Soccer City - has opened at Shopper’s Square (Plumb & Virginia). You are invited to the Grand Opening on June 8th at 4pm onwards. Check it out.

A Day That Will Live in Infamy - June 30th 2011

Prior to the kick off of the June 30th games there will be a race (the length of a soccer field), originating from foolish post-game comments at Coney Island . There are currently two official entrants Andrew “Atomic” Tolley and Shelly “Galloping” Gamble, both of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Both contestants are apparently supremely confident of an outcome in their favor but a majority, somewhat misguided I might add, seem to think Tolley is dead in the water. They must have missed last year’s extravaganza when the English thoroughbred shocked the Reno sprinting community with a comprehensive demolition of the field. Granted this race is between an almost 54 year colt (some say Nag) and a filly in her physical prime but there are those who know this is no foregone conclusion. Field Marshall Andrew Dunning will be overseeing race day events and is also organizing a charity book. Mark your calendars, it is gonna be like Seabiscuit – but just who is Seabiscuit?
