Another Four Soccer Games in Paradise – Don’t Think Twice

After arranging the absolutely perfect conditions we experienced last Thursday hopefully you have all now forgiven me for the jolly irritating atmospheric events I organized for the opening day. Bathed in the gorgeous vernal sunlight of a well-tempered mid-April eve where meandering cumuli made life good for otherwise squinting keepers just about every team had a great turnout. Great turnouts will no doubt leave some of us on the bench a little more than we would like, but it does make for some competitive games.

Way downtown at Reno High the much-favoured and curiously acronymically named OBG held off a spirited challenge from the not-quite-got-it-Wright-yet-Stuff in a near run thing where Ron “zero to ten in 15 minutes” Jones became the eldest known scorer in recorded soccer history.

At the recently aerated North Valleys fields Washoe County groundskeepers probably influenced results as much as any player. That being said, Team 6 Pack stood firm against the hot-air fueled Red ‘Canes with their own hurricane, namely Ryan “All is Right” Albright, netting a brace and taking “person of the match” honors in a 3-1 victory. League debutant Tenley “I do not know you well enough to have a nickname yet” Banik made sure the ‘Canes had something to blow about.

In the midst of things on NV2 the Blue Mooners eclipsed (how many times will I use this word this season?) the newly hued Chaingang in a narrow 2-1 victory that saw Reynolds O, Vlad the Impaler and Reynolds M all initiating their goal scoring tallies for the season. A not to be named keeper politely summed up the game at Coney during post-game analysis, “when the Mooners women started penetrating we were screwed (so to speak).”

When it comes to goal scoring tallies, Paul “no shorts” Roberti is throwing down the goal scoring gauntlet (or is that golden bootlet?) with his ruthless and shortless execution in front of goal. A brace last week and a hatrick this have him heading to dizzy heights of row ZED (ZEE) of the Nou Camp, where he will no doubt find the lost balls of many a wayward Walltrum shot on goal. Roberti’s trio, mighty McManus’ two-goal league debut and yet another miraculous goal from Kim “I shall use my speed” Wilkins saw the buoyant Bhoys & Ghirls notch another impressive victory on the proverbial goalpost. Lift’n Pints should not be too discouraged. Lucy “I am back from my curious knee injury” Osborne, benefitting from an assist by yours truly, scored her first post-partum goal and Mircea “I never go away except for my annual mid-season disappearance” Nicolescu netted a typically audacious little number to remind us that they have the firepower when push comes to shoving the ball in the old onion bag.

FAQs

Q - Why does OBG always play at Reno High?

A - Because OBG has personnel who were instrumental in the league securing the venue and they take care of the goals and lining there.

“Wayward” Wallstrum’s Wikipedia Thing - Missing Just One E.

Lift ‘n Pints skipper and league webmaster Wayward Wallstrum was Wikipedia wandering one Wednesday only to discover the “Dunning-Kruger Effect.” It made him chuckle, even though chuckling is not the exact effect of the Dunning-Kruger Effect if you get my drift. Check out this coincidentally (maybe even ironically) named piece of psychological who knows what at the link below. When you link, think about the self-assessment question in our registration process. Do it.

A Message From League Member Tony Filicchia

I am a teacher at Clayton Middle School and we are having a Career Day on Friday, May 18. Presentations will be in the gymnasium from 7:30 - 10:45, and we are looking for people of all occupations to speak to our kids about the world of work and to get them thinking of potential careers for their future. Presenters will set up a booth in the gym and speak to small groups of kids throughout the morning. This would be a great opportunity for you to speak about the work you do and spread a little motivation to a really great group of kids. If you are interested in donating some of your time and having a bunch of fun, and can fit this into your schedule, please contact me at tfilicchia@washoeschools.net or by phone at 746.2193 and I can give you more info. Thank you for considering this.
